Problems? Help and advice for Schubertline users

Schubertline strongly advises you to do free test prints before you buy a score, to check that you've set up your computer and printer correctly. Provided you can see music on the screen, you should be able to print it. However, if you run into difficulties...

Problems and solutions

IF THE MUSIC DOES NOT DISPLAY ON THE SCREEN...

Sibelius Scorch cannot be properly installed. Scorch is the free Sibelius score-reader; it is a browser plug-in which operates in conjunction with a browser such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, Firefox or Safari. On Windows, Scorch downloads automatically when you first try to view one of our scores, but if you use another browser such as Firefox, Opera or Netscape, or use a Macintosh computer, you need to click on one of the "install Scorch" links on the website's home page and catalog pages.

If you can't get Scorch to download, it may be because you have virus protection or a "Firewall" which prevents your computer from downloading browser plug-ins such as Scorch. Please consult the instructions that came with your virus protection or firewall software to find out how to allow your computer to accept input from the Schubertline or Sibelius servers.

IF THE MUSIC DISPLAYED ON THE SCREEN BEFORE PURCHASING IT, BUT DOESN'T SHOW UP AGAIN FOR PRINTING...

Your Shopping Basket may not have loaded up. Shopping Baskets cannot load up if your Internet Privacy / Security level is set to "High", because the baskets need to be able to accept information ("cookies") from our server to tell them what they have to remember. Certain types of "Firewall" - such as ZoneAlarm, or those installed to prevent "Pop-Ups" - have the same effect. For Schubertline to work, you may have to reduce the Internet Privacy level to "Medium" or "Default", and modify or temporarily disable firewalls and other virus protection.

Occasionally, on some computer systems (especially Macs), the first item to be added to a shopping basket is not accepted at the first attempt: on second and subsequent attempts, however, the basket loads up correctly.

IF YOUR COMPUTER OR BROWSER QUITS, FREEZES OR CRASHES BEFORE OR DURING THE PRINTING PROCESS...

This may mean that your system has run out of allocated memory before completing the printing. Although your computer may have lots of memory available, you may need to allocate more to your printer - and possibly your internet browser - especially if you have downloaded several scores. It stores these as 'Temporary internet files'. Your internet browser tries to store the web pages you have recently viewed in its memory, and if you have been browsing the website for some time, the memory allocation may have been used up. As a general rule, do not select more than 4 items per shopping basket; if you want to buy more than 4 scores, make more than one visit. It won't cost you any more...

However, if your browser regularly quits, or jumps back to the Catalog page, there may be a problem with Firewall software, or with a browser such as Internet Explorer which has encountered some other conflict or corruption. Internet Explorer is especially vulnerable to this sort of problem. Many customers find it useful to download a free alternative browser, such as Opera (from opera.com) or Mozilla Firefox, and to use this for Schubertline in preference to Internet Explorer.

IF TRANSPOSED MUSIC PRINTS IN THE 'WRONG' KEY...

You should check, when the score re-displays jus before printing, that the key you wanted is the one shown on the screen. It is still possible to make key changes at this late stage. Many users prefer to make transpositions just before printing, because the printed music will always be the same as that displayed on the screen. Key changes are 'cumulative', so if you make a series of key chnges there is a possibility that the system may get confused.

IF YOUR PRINTER PRINTED A BLANK WEB PAGE INSTEAD OF THE SCORE DISPLAYED ON THE SCREEN...

You should have clicked the Print button in the Scorch toolbar immediately above the score. Don't click Print at the top of your browser window, or Print in the File menu, or type Ctrl+P or Command-P - these will print the surrounding web page, not the score.

OTHER PRINTING PROBLEMS...

No paper came out of the printer: check your printer is switched on, contains paper and is plugged into your computer. If it is, it is probably not set up correctly. Please consult your computer's or printer's manual, or skip to 'If there is still a problem' below.

You ran out of paper. With most printers, don't turn off the printer - just feed in some more paper and it should continue printing.

The music doesn't fit on the paper: scores are designed to fit American letter size or European A4 size paper; they are also designed to adjust themselves slightly to fit the paper. If music at the bottom of a page seems to be missing, you may be able to adjust Page Set-Up to scale down the printing output to 90%.

Notes print as text characters or other font problems: this usually means that Scorch cannot be properly installed. Scorch installs a special music font called "Opus"; if this font is not present, notes will print as text characters. Try changing your printer's font settings. For instance, in Windows try printing again but click Properties... in the Print dialog box, then try changing options which affect font printing, such as 'Print fonts as graphics'. If the difficulty persists, un-install Scorch and Opus and download again.

If there is still a problem

If you have tried the above without success, check if you have the latest driver for your printer.

You should be able to download the latest driver from the printer manufacturer's web site:
Canon printers: http://www.canon.co.jp/download-e.html
Epson printers: http://support.epson.com/filelibrary.html
HP printers: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/eschome.html
Others: use your web browser to search for the manufacturer.

After downloading the driver, save it somewhere easy to find, such as on your desktop. Then set up your printer again from scratch (see below).

Setting up your printer from scratch

On Windows, click the Start button at the bottom left of the screen, then Settings, then Printers. Then double-click Add Printer and follow the instructions.
When asked for the manufacturer and model of your printer, if you have just obtained a new driver (e.g. by downloading it), click Have Disk... and find the new driver file.

When you've finished, find the score again, click Scorch's Print button and print it to see if it works. You may need to consult this page again to adjust the way it prints.
